Fed: Senate to sit despite election

The Senate will sit today and tomorrow despite a federal election being called.

Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD has left open the option of the Senate sitting until 5pm
tomorrow -- but he's described any work the upper house might do as pointless political
business.

The government lacks the numbers in the Senate to stop it from sitting, but the House
of Representatives has been dissolved.

A spokesman for Senate Opposition Leader JOHN FAULKNER says the minor parties have agreed to sit.

The program is expected to include a motion to convene a new inquiry into the children
overboard affair.

The Senate will also receive a report on the abuse of children in institutions.
