NSW: Carr lashes Canberra for immigration levels

New South Wales Premier BOB CARR says Australia's immigration intake quota should beslashed to ease the current pressure on Sydney.

Immigration Minister PHILIP RUDDOCK has said Australia's non-humanitarian intake willcontinue at 110,000 in 2003/04.

He says about 1,500 unused places will be rolled over from this year into next year.

But Mr CARR says the immigration intake should be slashed by 30,000 because the currentlevel is putting too much pressure on Sydney.

He says Sydney attracts 40 per cent of all migrants, which means between 700 and 1,000migrants a week arriving in Sydney.

Mr CARR has refused to comment on the mix of migrants that should be allowed into Australia, saying only that immigration should be pegged back to 80,000 a year.
